Chapter 9 - Flying Lessons

“There you are, I was starting to wonder if we would have to go without you,” Yaden greeted his husband with a smirk.

He leaned in to kiss Colin as he tried to wriggle past him through the hatch of Pebble. The cloth-wrapped bundle in Colin's hands smelled intensely of bread, fresh out of the oven.

“On the other hand, I concede that this is an excellent reason for being late,” he added with a wide grin.

Before he could sneak a glance under the cloth, Colin had dodged past him with a breathless laugh. “Oh no, you don't!” he chided. “This goes straight into the pantry. And it has to cool down first!”

Yaden pulled the hatch shut behind Colin, locked it, and followed him upstairs. “Are we ready to go?”

“Ready for take-off, Captain.”

Since their wedding, Yaden hadn't received a new mission yet, though he and Ivan had gone back on duty and to their training. He suspected that Commander Hamilton was making sure of it, so he and Colin got to enjoy some quality time after the wedding. It wasn't a honeymoon, but close enough. And of course, they were given time to learn how to fly Pebble. After discussing their options, they had decided to make it a family trip, all of them together for a few days, so everyone would get a little time at the controls. Plus, this way, they could find out what Pebble might be missing to be comfortable on eventual, long-term missions.

They had spent the morning packing and moving stuff onto Pebble that they might need for their family trip – food, personal items, books and movies to keep them entertained when they were not training.

Now, Yaden sensed Pebble hum with anticipation around him. Like him, she couldn't wait to get back into action.

“Are you coming up to the bridge for the take-off?” Yaden asked as Colin turned left towards the pantry.

“Sure, give me a minute to put this away,” Colin answered with a fond smile.

Colin didn't begrudge Yaden his affection for Pebble and instead happily shared in it, one more thing Yaden could fall in love with him for.

He made his way up to the bridge where the rest of his family was waiting. Darios was standing behind the captain's chair, Ivan was back at the weapons and shields console, while Myriam had claimed the communication and scanners station again. Both consoles were booted up already. Ivan and Myriam looked back at him eagerly.

“All ready?” Yaden asked.

“Aye, sir,” they answered in unison and grinned at each other.

“We're just waiting for Colin to come up.” Yaden walked over to the captain's chair and looked at it for a moment before sitting down. He had done so a few times by now, but it still felt special. Would it ever not? It was easy to imagine his grandfather watching and his mental image of the old man was smiling proudly.

“Do I need to strap myself in somewhere or something?” Colin asked as he bustled onto the bridge as well.
